The Los Angeles Rams suffered another frustrating defeat Sunday, falling 18-16 to the Arizona Cardinals after Chad Ryland drilled a 43 yard field goal as time expired. Despite taking the lead in the final minute, Los Angeles could not complete the comeback, dropping to 2-4 on the 2026 NFL season.
The loss was particularly disappointing for the Rams, who entered the matchup as heavy favorites. Arizona, meanwhile, earned a much needed victory behind Ryland’s outstanding performance and a defense that repeatedly frustrated Los Angeles.
Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford finished with 222 passing yards and two touchdown passes, but the offense struggled to find consistency for much of the afternoon.
Los Angeles initially took a 3-0 lead after Quentin Lake intercepted Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett. Stafford later connected with running back Blake Corum on a 15 yard touchdown pass, giving the Rams a 9-6 advantage.
However, Arizona controlled much of the second half, using long drives and repeated field goals to build a 15-9 lead in the fourth quarter.
The Rams had several opportunities to respond but struggled to capitalize. A costly fumble by tight end Tyler Higbee and a turnover on downs stalled promising possessions, leaving Los Angeles in danger of suffering another defeat.
Stafford finally delivered when the Rams needed him most. After a 42 yard completion to Puka Nacua helped spark the drive, Stafford found tight end Colby Parkinson for a six yard touchdown with 47 seconds remaining. Ethan Evans converted the extra point, putting Los Angeles ahead 16-15.
Arizona refused to surrender. Brissett connected with Ja’Corey Brooks for a crucial 21-yard completion before a 15 yard unnecessary roughness penalty moved the Cardinals closer to field-goal range.
Ryland then calmly connected from 43 yards as time expired, completing the stunning upset.
The Cardinals improved to 2-4, matching the Rams’ record. Ryland finished with six field goals, accounting for all 18 of Arizona’s points.
Los Angeles now faces serious questions after another disappointing performance. Special teams problems, offensive mistakes and missed opportunities continue to hurt the team.
The Rams will look to regroup before facing the Las Vegas Raiders next Sunday. With their record now at 2-4, they need a much stronger performance to get their season back on track.
