Ranking each team's QB situations following the NFL Draft

The quarterback is the most important position on the field, and some teams' situations are better than others heading into the 2019 season. Here's a ranking of the NFL quarterback situations following the draft.

1 of 32

1. Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs
Jay Biggerstaff / USA Today Sports Images

Patrick Mahomes is the reigning NFL MVP and won the award in only his first season as a starter, at age 23. The sky is the limit with a great set of weapons and Andy Reid calling plays, and just for good measure, No. 2 quarterback Chad Henne is a solid backup with 53 NFL starts to his name.

2 of 32

2. Green Bay Packers

Green Bay Packers
Stew Milne / USA Today Sports Images

Rodgers is known as the top performing quarterback of his era if we consider the consistency of his stats, even if he's only won one Super Bowl. The two-time MVP has had injury issues in recent seasons but is still going strong at age 35 and should have at least a few productive years left in him after producing an incredible 25/2 TD/INT ratio last season. As for the backup, DeShone Kizer has looked like a deer in headlights in his first two seasons, but it's still a bit early to judge him only two seasons into his NFL career.

3 of 32

3. Seattle Seahawks

Seattle Seahawks
Kirby Lee / USA Today Sports Images

Russell Wilson has developed into an elite quarterback, now leading what is a run-heavy offense. He's still extremely mobile and throws arguably the prettiest deep ball in the game. Wilson has yet to win fewer than nine games in a season over his seven seasons, and he had a career-best 35/7 TD/INT ratio last season. He hasn't missed a game in his career, and Seahawks fans can plan on many more great seasons as he enters his age 31 campaign.

4 of 32

4. Indianapolis Colts

Indianapolis Colts
Troy Taormina / USA Today Sports Images

After missing all of 2017 due to a shoulder injury, Andrew Luck rebounded to play at an MVP level last year. He attempted a career-high 639 passes, completing 67.3 percent in Frank Reich's offense and throwing for more than 4,500 yards and 39 touchdowns. Interceptions are still an issue for Luck, and we shouldn't forget about his injury history, missing time in 2015 and 2016 prior to his 2017 shoulder injury. Backup Jacoby Brissett started in his stead during the 2017 season, and some consider him a capable starter for another team.

5 of 32

5. Los Angeles Rams

Los Angeles Rams
Jayne Kamin-Oncea / USA Today Sports Images

Goff had a disastrous rookie season in 2016, but the former first overall draft choice has made back-to-back Pro Bowls since Sean McVay has taken over the Rams. He had a career-high 8.4 yards per attempt last year in one of the most potent offenses in the league, though he struggled in the Super Bowl against the Patriots. While Goff threw for nearly 4,700 yards last season, Todd Gurley's knee issues could hurt his production in the near future. The Rams brought in former Jaguars starter Blake Bortles to back up Goff this season.

6 of 32

6. Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles
Eric Hartline / USA Today Sports Images

Carson Wentz was the favorite to win NFL MVP before tearing his ACL late in the 2017 season, and he wasn't quite the same last year before a season-ending back injury. Considering he also had injuries in college, Wentz's durability is a concern. Still, he's played at an elite level early in his career, when healthy. Backups Nate Sudfeld and rookie Clayton Thorson are clear downgrades from Nick Foles, who left for the starting job in Jacksonville.

7 of 32

7. New England Patriots

New England Patriots
Robert Deutsch / USA Today Sports Images

Brady won his sixth Super Bowl last season and also has three MVPs to his name. When all is said and done, he will be considered the greatest quarterback in history, and he still played well at age 41. However, he also had his share of struggles during the 2018 regular season while fighting through a knee injury, and there should be some anxiety considering that basically no quarterback has played well in the league at age 42. Brian Hoyer is an experienced backup, and fourth-round pick Jarrett Stidham does look like an intriguing project.

8 of 32

8. New Orleans Saints

New Orleans Saints
Chuck Cook / USA Today Sports Images

Brees could be entering the final season of his career at age 40 and has set the completion percentage record in back-to-back seasons. It's also hard to beat his 32/5 TD/INT from last season, though Brees has certainly been helped by a more effective running game over the last two years. It's clear that his arm strength has declined recently, but it's difficult to be more effective on the throws he has attempted. Teddy Bridgewater is also a quarterback with significant NFL experience; he got an offer to start in Miami before reupping with the Saints.

9 of 32

9. Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta Falcons
Charles LeClaire / USA Today Sports Images

Matt Ryan's play has been up and down since winning the MVP in 2016. He was mediocre in 2017 with only 20/12 TD/INT but bounced back last year with more than 4,900 yards passing for the second time in three years and a 35/7 TD/INT ratio that nearly equaled his MVP season. Atlanta has complemented him with great weapons like Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley. Backup Matt Schaub was a longtime starter in Houston, but Falcons fans are fortunate they haven't needed to watch him in the regular season.

10 of 32

10. Los Angeles Chargers

Los Angeles Chargers
Jay Biggerstaff / USA Today Sports Images

Philip Rivers played arguably his best football at age 37 last season, completing more than 68 percent of his passes with 32/12 TD/INT. It's quite a late-career turnaround after he led the league in interceptions during 2014 and 2016. He's yet to miss a start since 2006, as well. The team did invest in the backup spot should something go wrong, signing former Bills and Browns starter Tyrod Taylor this offseason.

11 of 32

11. Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers
Philip G. Pavely / USA Today Sports Images

Ben Roethlisberger led the NFL in passing yards for the second time last season, but he also led it in interceptions. He continues to play well in his mid-30s and recently signed an extension, though the loss of Antonio Brown will certainly test him. Pittsburgh has been hoarding quarterbacks in recent drafts with Joshua Dobbs and Mason Rudolph, though the abilities of that pair remain to be seen.

12 of 32

12. Houston Texans

Houston Texans
John Glaser / USA Today Sports Images

Head coach Bill O'Brien has finally found his quarterback, as Deshaun Watson's play has been excellent in his first two seasons when he's been on the field. He tore his ACL for the second time in a freak practice injury during his rookie season but returned last year to complete more than 68 percent of his passes and throw for 4,165 yards and 26 touchdowns, adding 551 yards and five scores on the ground. His production has also been behind a sub-par offensive line, but Watson's injury history should penalize his ranking slightly. Backup AJ McCarron lost Buffalo's starting job to Nathan Peterman last preseason, which says all we need to know.

13 of 32

13. Chicago Bears

Chicago Bears
Kyle Terada / USA Today Sports Images

Mitchell Trubisky is coming off a breakout second season with the Bears, after the team added several offensive weapons and head coach Matt Nagy. He completed nearly 67 percent of his passes in Nagy's West Coast offense with a solid 7.4 yards per attempt, and he added 421 yards rushing. It looks like the Bears really have something to build on, and backup Chase Daniel wasn't overwhelmed when he made two emergency starts for the team.

14 of 32

14. Detroit Lions

Detroit Lions
Jeff Hanisch / USA Today Sports Images

Matthew Stafford's production faltered last season with the Lions transitioning to a more run-heavy offense. Prior to that point, he had thrown for at least 4,200 yards in seven straight seasons with a touchdown-to-interception ratio of better than 2:1. At 31, there's expectation that he will rebound in a new offense. Connor Cook and Tom Savage currently stand as the mediocre backup options.

15 of 32

15. Cleveland Browns

Cleveland Browns
John Glaser / USA Today Sports Images

Baker Mayfield was drafted first overall in 2018 and showed great promise, particularly late in his rookie season. His 63.8 percent completion rate and 27/14 TD/INT over 14 games is terrific for a rookie, and his job will be made easier this season by the addition of Odell Beckham Jr. There's reason to think the Browns will have a blossoming offense this year. Veteran Drew Stanton is the backup if something goes wrong.

16 of 32

16. Jacksonville Jaguars

Jacksonville Jaguars
Chuck Cook / USA Today Sports Images

Nick Foles seems to do his best work in the playoffs if the last two years are any indication. The former Super Bowl MVP hasn't exactly been great in his eight regular-season starts over the last two years, and it remains to be seen how he performs with downgraded weapons in Jacksonville. Backing him up is conservative, young Cody Kessler.

17 of 32

17. Dallas Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys
Chuck Cook / USA Today Sports Images

Dak Prescott rebounded from a sub-par second season, especially after the team acquired Amari Cooper from Oakland at midseason. With Cooper's aid, Prescott threw for 274 yards per game and 14/4 TD/INT. He's also a mobile quarterback, but Dallas has yet to put pressure on him to produce big numbers.

18 of 32

18. Carolina Panthers

Carolina Panthers
Kim Klement / USA Today Sports Images

Cam Newton's play has been inconsistent since he won the NFL MVP in 2015, and shoulder injuries have been a big part of that inconsistency. Since throwing for 4,000 yards in his rookie season in 2011, Newton has yet to reach that mark again, but he did have a good year last season in Norv Turner's offense, completing a career-high 67.9 percent of his passes with 28 touchdowns between the air and ground. The Panthers are clearly concerned about the hits he's taken in recent years, drafting West Virginia quarterback Will Grier in the third round.

19 of 32

19. Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota Vikings
Brace Hemmelgarn / USA Today Sports Images

Minnesota gave Kirk Cousins a huge three-year contract last offseason, but the results in Year 1 were disappointing. The team missed out on the playoffs at 8-7-1, though Cousins did throw for nearly 4,300 yards and 30 touchdowns. The team is looking to go more run-heavy this season. Former Ram Sean Mannion currently stands as the likely No. 2 quarterback.

20 of 32

20. New York Jets

New York Jets
Vincent Carchietta / USA Today Sports Images

Sam Darnold showed flashes as the youngest starting quarterback in the league last season. He completed only 57.7 percent of his passes with mediocre talent around him. The Jets have hired quarterback guru Adam Gase to help, as well as signed Le'Veon Bell and Jamison Crowder, so a sophomore jump is expected. Former Broncos starter Trevor Siemian is currently the Jets backup.

21 of 32

21. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Matthew Emmons / USA Today Sports Images

Jameis Winston had his second consecutive disappointing season, and the Bucs have hired Bruce Arians to fix him. Winston was suspended for the first three games and didn't start straight through the year, as Ryan Fitzpatrick was rewarded for his hot start. The interception issues that Winston had in college came back to haunt him with 14 picks in only 11 games. He's heading into a make-or-break season, while first-round bust Blaine Gabbert is set to be his backup.

22 of 32

22. Oakland Raiders

Oakland Raiders
Jay Biggerstaff / USA Today Sports Images

The Raiders resisted the urge to draft a quarterback early this year, showing some confidence in Derek Carr despite last year's struggles. His play has been mediocre over the last two seasons with the Raiders offensive line play deteriorating, and Jon Gruden wasn't able to fix him last season when Carr had only 19/10 TD/INT and 7.3 yards per attempt. With the additions of Antonio Brown, Tyrell Williams and Josh Jacobs, Oakland expects more success this year or it'll likely be drafting a quarterback next season.

23 of 32

23. San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco 49ers
Sergio Estrada / USA Today Sports Images

Jimmy Garoppolo has had injury issues during his NFL career, including his most severe last season, a torn ACL suffered in Week 3. The 49ers were all in on Garoppolo after acquiring him from New England for a second-round pick in 2017, and while he did go 5-0 as a starter in his first season, Garoppolo also threw five interceptions in six games. His play declined considerably last year, completing less than 60 percent of his passes, but the 49ers have added more weapons for him in the draft. Surprise backup Nick Mullens proved adequate while Garoppolo was out last season.

24 of 32

24. Cincinnati Bengals

Cincinnati Bengals
David Kohl / USA Today Sports Images

Andy Dalton played only 11 games last year due to injury, and he's continued to have accuracy issues over the last two years. He completed only 61.9 percent of his passes and threw 11 interceptions. Former Rams quarterback coach Zac Taylor is being counted on to fix Dalton. If the Bengals struggle early, the team could try fourth-round pick Ryan Finley.

25 of 32

25. Tennessee Titans

Tennessee Titans
Robert Deutsch / USA Today Sports Images

Marcus Mariota looked like a solid NFL starter through his first two seasons, but the last two years have been disappointing. After throwing 13/15 TD/INT in 2017, the Titans hired former Rams assistant Matt LaFleur to fix him. Mariota played through nerve issues in his throwing arm, and while he completed 69 percent of his passes in a more conservative offense, he had a pitiful 11/8 TD/INT in 14 games. At this point Mariota looks like nothing more than a game manager and an injury-prone one at that. The Titans added former Dolphins starter Ryan Tannehill as the backup, and there's a non-zero chance he could challenge Mariota at some point this season.

26 of 32

26. Denver Broncos

Denver Broncos
Mitch Stringer / USA Today Sports Images

The Broncos have struggled at quarterback since Peyton Manning's retirement. Their new plan is veteran Joe Flacco, with rookie Drew Lock as the backup after he fell to them in the second round of the draft. Flacco was highly mediocre over the last four seasons in Baltimore with a losing record and 46 interceptions in 51 games, albeit with so-so weapons, and he missed time last year due to injury. Lock needs some seasoning but shows potential with a strong arm and mobility.

27 of 32

27. Arizona Cardinals

Arizona Cardinals
Mark J. Rebilas / USA Today Sports Images

The Cardinals drafted Josh Rosen 10th overall last year, but they decided to have a do-over this year by drafting Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray with the top pick. Murray is a unique talent, showing great accuracy and mobility at Oklahoma. Arizona doesn't have a great offensive line but has surrounded Murray with some solid, young wideouts, along with veteran Larry Fitzgerald. Already the favorite to win Rookie of the Year, Murray could vault up to the top half of this list at this time next year. Former Packers backup Brett Hundley is the current No. 2 option.

28 of 32

28. Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore Ravens
Kirby Lee / USA Today Sports Images

2018 first-round pick Lamar Jackson stepped in for the injured Joe Flacco during the second half of last season, and Baltimore hasn't looked back. He went 6-1 as a starter during the regular season with the team employing a run-heavy offense. Jackson averaged only 159 yards passing per start but did run for nearly 80 yards per game. It's still unclear if Jackson can throw effectively at this level, but the Ravens will find out. Former Rookie of the Year turned bust Robert Griffin III has a similar skill set, so he's a fit as Jackson's backup.

29 of 32

29. Miami Dolphins

Miami Dolphins
Steven Bisig / USA Today Sports Images

Miami is in rebuild mode, signing Ryan Fitzpatrick in the offseason before trading two draft picks for Josh Rosen during the draft. The two quarterbacks will compete for the starting job. Fitzpatrick has shown great flashes during his career, including last year in Tampa Bay, but he runs hot and cold too often. Rosen was overwhelmed in Arizona with a terrible supporting cast, completing only 55.2 percent of his passes with 11/14 TD/INT in 14 games. He will inevitably get a shot this season to convince Miami that it doesn't need to draft a quarterback next year.

30 of 32

30. Washington Redskins

Washington Redskins
Mike Carter / USA Today Sports Images

The quarterback position has been quite a whirlwind for Washington over the last year. The team let Kirk Cousins walk in free agency last offseason and traded for Alex Smith. But a catastrophic leg injury last season put his NFL future in doubt, so the team traded for Case Keenum and drafted Dwayne Haskins. Haskins is likely to find the field sooner than later, and he's an intriguing arm who showed great accuracy at Ohio State. However, he could get a rude awakening with a Washington offense that lacks blue-chip talent.

31 of 32

31. Buffalo Bills

Buffalo Bills
Rich Barnes / USA Today Sports Images

The seventh overall pick in last year's draft, Josh Allen was as raw as advertised in his rookie season. He has arguably the strongest arm in the league and the wheels to match, but he completed only 52.8 percent of his passes in his rookie season. He also had 12 interceptions in 12 games. Buffalo has added significant receiver talent this offseason to help Allen, so 2019 will be interesting to watch. He's backed up by experienced quarterbacks in Matt Barkley and Derek Anderson.

32 of 32

32. New York Giants

New York Giants
Danielle Parhizkaran / USA Today Sports Images

Two-time Super Bowl winner Eli Manning's play has been in a downward spiral for years, and the addition of head coach Pat Shurmur didn't really help last year. Manning did complete a career-high 66 percent of his passes, but his 5-11 record, 21/11 TD/INT and 7.5 yards per attempt are hardly irreplaceable. The football world was puzzled when the Giants used the sixth overall draft choice on Duke quarterback Daniel Jones, who never threw for 3,000 yards in a season during college. Manning, at age 38, will try to hold off Jones, and without Odell Beckham Jr.
