A year after the high-speed collision that left two people in the hospital, the Dallas County Attorney’s Office issued a punishment for Kansas City Chiefs’ Rashee Rice. Rice, who was speeding on the left lane of the North Central Expressway, will spend a month in jail and face 5 years of deferred probation after pleading guilty to the charges.
Rice consented to a guilty plea on two third-degree felony charges: collision involving serious bodily injury, and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. The plea deal also agreed to pay over $115,000 to cover the victims’ out-of-pocket medical costs.
Some of the victims have sued Rice separately. He settled one of those lawsuits on July 16, agreeing to pay around $1.086 million. Another lawsuit, filed in May, is still ongoing.
John Creuzot, Dallas County District Attorney, spoke after the office declared the charges. In a statement, he claimed that it’s important that a public person like Rice takes accountability and acknowledges the dangers of driving recklessly.
A vehicle in the wrong hands can be as dangerous as any weapon. We are extremely fortunate that no lives were lost that day, and Mr. Rice is fortunate to have walked away unharmed.
John Cruezot added
Rice also released a statement through his lawyer after pleading guilty. In the statement, he acknowledged his crimes and apologized for the innocent victims of the accident. He also mentioned that he has spent countless nights without sleeping.
There have been a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages that my actions caused, and I will continue working within my means to make sure that everyone impacted will be made whole. I urge everyone to mind the speed limit, drive safe and drive smart.

The National Football League (NFL) is set to launch its own investigation, considering they do so only after the case is settled. The organization usually takes up two to three months to finalize its punishments in such cases.
The ruling is not expected to come before the fantasy football drafts, potentially leading to expulsion from many fantasy teams. Apart from the fantasy melodrama, the decision will alter several plans in Kansas City as well.
The Chiefs might be looking at several games without Rice, which might be a bottleneck for Andy Reid and Matt Nagy. Nevertheless, because Rice missed quite a few games last season with his knee injury, they might be okay with the workaround.
According to team sources, Rice is expected to miss at least two games and possibly four games. However, Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports suggested that the range could fall between five and seven games, while NFL Network’s James Palmer believes an eight-game ban is possible.

In case if Jones and Palmer are right, the player is set to miss some exciting fixtures. In the first eight weeks, the Chiefs are scheduled to play the defending champions, Baltimore Ravens, and Detroit Lions. If Palmer’s prediction is more accurate, Rice can only return after Week 8 game against the Washington Commanders.
Looking at precedents, in 2023 Brandin Echols and Sam Williams were awarded 1 game for a crash causing partial paralysis and a 3-game ban for reckless driving with possession of a weapon and marijuana, respectively. In 2020, Aldrick Rosas, a former New York Giants placekicker, was suspended for four games for an alcohol-involved hit-and-run with misdemeanor charges. Nevertheless, the NFL is not bound by any precedents and could hit Rice with a heavier suspension due to his high-profile status.
