After months and months of waiting for resolution, Rashee Rice and the Kansas City Chiefs are finally gaining some clarity about a legal situation that's been hanging overhead for a long time.
Per ESPN reporter Adam Schefter, Rashee Rice has finally been sentenced by a Dallas County judge for charges levied on him back in April 2024. The judge, per Schefter, sentenced Rice to 30 days in jail to be served over a five-year probationary period.
As a reminder, Rice and another party, Theodore Knox, were driving at high speeds on a Dallas highway, which resulted in a multi-vehicle accident that led to injuries. Rice faced 8 total charges: one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury, and six counts of collision involving injury.
Now that the judge has ruled in Rashee Rice's case from April 2024, the Chiefs might also learn his likely suspension from the NFL.
Since that moment, Rice has not only been awaiting the legal punishment for his part in the tragic incident while also waiting for the presumed hammer to fall from the National Football League and/or the team—likely in the form of a multiple-game suspension and possible fine.
Because the legal situation was left unsettled, Rice was eligible to play the entire 2024 season for the Chiefs, although an injury cut that short in Week 4 when Patrick Mahomes awkwardly fell on Rice's leg.
Rice's availability for the coming NFL season has been a talking point on two fronts, knowing that he was facing recovery from a significant injury and because he's likely to miss one or more games due to a suspension.
The NFL has yet to announce any punishment, but now that the judge has ruled, the league has every reason to expedite their decision given the amount of time that's already passed in this case.
Rice had 24 catches for 288 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Chiefs in three full games last season.
