Tyler Huntley saved the Baltimore Ravens season last year so it might be hard to envision him as a true backup quarterback.
The undrafted free agent out of Utah started four games for Baltimore and went 2-2 in those starts . He completed 67 percent of his passes in those starts and helped the Ravens reach the postseason despite losing franchise quarterback Lamar Jackson late in the year.
Now, with a top seed locked up and nothing to play for in the season finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Huntley will get another opportunity to show he has all the makings of a quality starting quarterback.
"[This is an] opportunity to get out there and play some ball and get another win for the Ravens," Huntley explained. "I’m just going to seize the moment and do what I do.”
Few teams across the NFL have the kind of quarterback room that the Ravens have. While not equal to that of the MVP front-runner in Jackson, Huntley's skill set is similar. That allows for the offense not to miss a beat as a unit whenever Huntley hits the field.
"That’s true for any quarterbacks or any players," Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said. "Everybody brings their own stamp to it. As a coach, I think you recognize that...They have their different style, and you recognize that. And it is fun to watch.”
Many of Baltimore's top starters are not expected to play this week due to the fact they have nothing to play for. Playing against a Steelers team that is a win and some help away from the playoffs, Huntley knows he's playing a team that will be heavily motivated to win.
That won't deter the 25-year-old, though.
“[The Steelers] are a physical team, and it’s always a good game," Huntley stated. "We’ve just got to just score points, and our defense is going to handle the rest.”
As the immediate backup to Jackson, Huntley has seen action this year in four games - mostly in garbage time where Baltimore was in command. In those contests, Huntley has completed six of nine passes with four of them going for first downs.
That attempt to push the ball downfield isn't just something he does himself, but more about what the Ravens want to do as a group on offense with Todd Monken as the play-caller.
"It’s a straightforward plan each and every week, and it’s easy to grasp and just take it play by play. Really, I think, that’s what ‘LJ’ [Lamar Jackson] just shot through the roof [on] – just taking every play one snap at a time.”
The Ravens can confidently say they'll be in good hands with Huntley on Saturday.
With his contract expiring after this year though, the four-year NFL veteran has a chance to show other teams that he is more than capable of leading their franchise, and not being a career backup.
