Ravens veteran keeps proving at camp that he’s not going away quietly

The Baltimore Ravens' preseason is in full swing, but players are still giving it their all in practice. Many rookies are getting acclimated to their new roles in the NFL, and other fringe-roster players are doing everything possible to earn the coaching staff’s faith to make the 53-man roster heading into the regular season.

Cornerback Jalyn Armour-Davis has been putting everything on the line in training camp, and it is already paying off. His outstanding offseason performance translated onto the field. The 25-year-old had a standout game in the team’s Week 1 preseason win over the Indianapolis Colts.

Going into camp, the 2022 fourth-round pick’s roster spot was at risk. He could still be considered to be on the hot seat, but he has been all over the field during the entire span of the offseason, and seeing him lock down Colts’ receivers on Thursday night should put him in the driver’s seat for one of the final roster spots.

Jalyn Armour-Davis is not going away quietly

Armour-Davis has always shown the ability of an NFL-caliber corner. It comes in flashes, but Baltimore could have another rotational piece at the position. He just needs to stay healthy. Even then, the snaps may not come consistently if he does suit up for the full season.

Baltimore’s corner unit is filled to the brim. Marlon Humphrey, Nate Wiggins, and Jaire Alexander are going to take the starting spots, and Chidobe Awuzie should also get valuable playing time. Throw in second-year pro T.J. Tampa, and there is a ton of competition. Thankfully for Armour-Davis, he is one of the most versatile players on the team.

Following Saturday’s training camp practice, head coach John Harbaugh outlined what makes Armour-Davis so special.

“He can play really every position. I’m pretty confident he can play safety,” Harbaugh said. “He plays all three corner spots and knows what he’s doing, and he’s had a really good camp.”

Armour-Davis knows the situation at cornerback. He is more than willing to let his versatility shine through if it means getting more reps. When asked about playing safety during Saturday’s press conference, he highlighted how crucial it is to use that versatility.

“I’m never gonna say no to an opportunity to play on this defense. So if [safety’s] where coaches think that I would be able to excel at, then I’m gonna give that a shot. It helps knowing that safety would be the last position for me to complete in the secondary,” Armour-Davis said. “So whenever it’s my turn to be in a certain spot, I understand what everyone else is doing, which helps me be able to adjust on the fly…I view it as a great thing that my coaches trust me to be able to plug and play anywhere.”

The regular season is inching closer, and with each passing day, it seems like Armour-Davis’ spot is becoming more and more secure, but he will need to keep his foot on the gas.
