Reality of Vikings' Tuesday roster shuffling isn't particularly exciting

When the Vikings surprisingly announced on Tuesday afternoon that they had waived backup guard Trevor Keegan, it raised eyebrows among a fan base hungry for their team to make a splash. It was reasonable to wonder if a spot on the 53-man roster was being cleared for a noteworthy addition, especially with Keegan being the only backup offensive lineman listed as a guard on the team’s official roster.

While it’s fun to speculate and dream, the reality of these things is usually pretty unremarkable. That appears to be the case this time, as well.

On the same day they waived Keegan, the Vikings hosted four free agent offensive linemen for tryouts — two tackles and two guards. According to insider Jordan Schultz on Wednesday, they’re signing one of the tackles, an undrafted rookie out of Arkansas named Corey Robinson II.

Robinson is a Georgia native who began his college career at Kansas, then played three seasons at Georgia Tech before finishing his career at Arkansas last season. He played nearly 2,500 snaps in college, all but eight of which came at left tackle. Robinson signed with the Bengals as a UDFA and played 24 offensive snaps at tackle in the preseason. He’s a bit undersized and has underwhelming athletic testing numbers.

This looks like GM Nolan Teasley continuing to do what he’s done all season, which is cycle through players on the practice squad and at the back end of the 53-man roster in the name of competition and evaluation.

It’s slightly interesting that the Vikings swapped a guard for a tackle this week. That may indicate that they’re now primary viewing third-round rookie Caleb Tiernan as a guard, not a tackle. Backup center Michael Jurgens is also an option at guard, as are practice squad players Henry Byrd and Josh Priebe. Robinson now becomes the Vikings’ fourth tackle behind their two starters and backup Ryan Van Demark.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that No. 3 running back and important special teams contributor DeeJay Dallas is out of practice squad elevations, so he’ll need to be signed to the 53-man roster as well.

It’s still possible that the Vikings end up making an exciting trade addition or two. But any speculation that Keegan’s release was a precursor to a big move appears to have been a false alarm.
