Recent Saints injury opens the door for an undrafted rookie to surprise everyone and win an important job for Kellen Moore

Clapp seemed like the favorite to have the backup center job locked up by the time there season rolls around. Now, that role is up for grabs, and the Saints have multiple young players who could win it - depending on if they want to add another veteran to the mix or not.

Opportunity for Torricelli Simpkins III and Kyle Hergel

Torricelli Simpkins III is an undrafted free agent that played pretty well in the preseason opener for New Orleans. He caught the eye of some Saints media and fans of the team. Simpkins needs to stack performances if he wants to secure a roster spot, but he is off to a good start in black and gold.

Kyle Hergel is an intriguing player, too. I thought he was impressive last year during the preseason, and he was a consistent standout during camp/practices. With this injury to Clapp, I would expect him to get an extended look at center and even a backup guard spot if someone else transitions to center from there. With how the depth chart is currently constructed, he is in a good spot to win a roster spot. There's still some work left to do, though, and proving himself in these final two preseason games is the perfect start to that.

Veteran Shane Lemieux is also in the fold as key depth on the interior. He spent last season with the Saints and was recently signed from free agency.

All three players will have additional motivation to show their skills and consistency following the unfortunate outcome for Clapp. We will see how it shakes out for Kellen Moore's offense.
