On Saturday, the Oklahoma Sooners lost out on Jacob Eberhart, a four-star athlete from Kirkwood High School in St. Louis, Missouri, and one that Oklahoma really wanted because of his ability to play so many positions, and maybe even play on both sides of the ball.
He was supposed to be a Sooner right now, based on everything we've heard leading up to this, as so many people pledged crystal balls and predicted that Eberhart would land with Oklahoma, making their last two months on a roll even better.
But Saturday taught us that you can't always believe everything from insiders -- sometimes they're wrong, and sometimes these kids switch up. It's fine, it happens, and it happened to Oklahoma.
Eberhart, a 6'1" and 200-pound athlete, shines as a wide receiver, corner, safety, and linebacker. In his 2024 junior season, he had 42 catches for 795 yards and 15 touchdowns on offense, plus three interceptions on defense. He's good, or he wouldn't have had offers from schools like Alabama, Missouri, LSU, Oregon, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Ohio State. And, Oklahoma was leading the charge for a very long time. But that doesn't always matter -- recruiting can get crazy.
Eberhart’s recruitment took off with 20 offers in January alone. In May 2025, he named a top seven of Alabama, Missouri, LSU, Oregon, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Illinois. Missouri stood out as he’s a local talent, coached by former NFL player Jeremy Maclin and mentored by his cousin, former Missouri star Markus Golden. But, they weren't even one of his two top options.
For the No. 4 player in Missouri by 247Sports, it was either Oklahoma or Illinois, and he went with the latter.
"I know I broke so many people's hearts at Oklahoma," Eberhart said after choosing Illinois. "But I feel like it was the right decision. And there are no bridges burnt. I still love OU, man. I want to thank Coach Venables, Coach Hall, Coach Valai, and Coach Chavis for giving me that push... I hope the best for y'all in the future, man, and I hope we don't burn any bridges. Because I still love y'all. It's love for everybody on the OU side."

The Sooners will move on, and maybe try to flip him on signing day, or maybe they just completely stay away from the kid. Who knows, but it's good to see him upset about letting some people at OU down. You can tell he's a good kid who was raised right.
