After Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season, it’s no surprise that the Buffalo Bills are on top of Athlon Sports’ new statistical measurement, the Red Zone Plus/Minus. Using our scoring method, the Bills’ offense had a league-best score of 36, with five red-zone touchdowns and two red-zone field goals in Sunday night’s 41-40 comeback victory over the Baltimore Ravens.
Here's a reminder how the Red Zone Plus/Minus is calculated: Red-zone drives resulting in a touchdown earn six points. Field goals earn three points. If a defense allows a red-zone touchdown, that’s minus-six, and a red-zone field goal allowed is minus-three.
The Bills’ five red-zone touchdowns were two more than any other team in Week 1. Six teams scored three touchdowns from inside the 20: the Indianapolis Colts, Washington Commanders, Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets. Among those six, only the Jets lost.
The Jets finished with a score of +3 in their 34-32 loss to the Steelers. They were one of three teams to finish with a positive Red Zone Plus/Minus despite losing. The others were the Atlanta Falcons, who lost a close game to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the New England Patriots, who lost to the Las Vegas Raiders. Thus, the Steelers, Bucs and Raiders are the only 1-0 teams with a negative plus/minus.
One week of data can be misleading. The Ravens only scored one red-zone touchdown — but they also had four touchdowns of more than 20 yards.
Athlon Sports will continue to compile these stats through the season to see how the numbers correlate with the NFL standings.
