Red Zone Plus/Minus Rankings NFL Week 5: Colts Take Over Top Spot
Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images

The Indianapolis Colts remain the most surprising success story of the 2025 NFL season, and their ascension to the top spot in this week’s Red Zone Plus/Minus rankings is another sign that the Colts are for real.

With quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Jonathan Taylor leading the offense and the defense playing solid, the Colts are 4-1 and currently own the No. 1 seed in the AFC. They are the only team in the league that ranks in the top three in both points scored per game and points allowed per game.

As far as Red Zone Plus/Minus goes, The Colts lead the league with 25 offensive trips into the red zone, and they’ve come away with points on every drive — scoring 15 touchdowns and 10 field goals.

Defensively, the Colts have allowed the fifth-fewest red-zone drives (13), allowing eight touchdowns and three field goals on those drives — meaning they’ve had two red-zone stops.

Here’s a reminder how the Red Zone Plus/Minus is calculated: Red-zone drives resulting in a touchdown earn six points. Field goals earn three points. If a defense allows a red-zone touchdown, that’s minus-six, and a red-zone field goal allowed is minus-three.

A few other observations from the updated Red Zone Plus/Minus:

  • Two teams with a losing record have a positive Red Zone Plus/Minus: Kansas City Chiefs (2-3, +21) and Arizona Cardinals (2-3, +6).
  • Four teams with a winning record have a negative plus/minus: Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-1, -3), Pittsburgh Steelers (3-1, -6), Washington Commanders (3-2, -9) and Los Angeles Chargers (3-2, -21).
  • The Houston Texans, with a plus/minus of 0, have scored the second-fewest red-zone points this season but are tied for the second-fewest red-zone points allowed.
  • The Detroit Lions are second to the Colts with 24 total red-zone drives, but they lead the league in TD percentage — scoring touchdowns on 79.2% of those drives.
  • Conversely, the New Yorlk Giants have the worst TD percentage, socring touchdowns on just 31.6% of their red-zone drives. Surprisingly, the Giants are actually tied for sixth in the NFL with 19 red-zone drives. But not only have they been held to just six touchdowns on those 19 drives, they’ve settled for field goals on seven of those drives. In other words, they’ve come away with zero points on six of their red-zone drives this season.
  • The Baltimore Ravens’ defensive futility is perfectly illustrated by its red-zone performance. The Ravens have allowed a league-high 25 red-zone drives, and opponents have scored touchdowns on 19 of those drives (76%). To make matters worse, the other six drives resulted in field goals. Baltimore has yet to produce a red-zone stop.
