Scott Hanson has been at NFL Network since 2006 and has anchored the popular NFL RedZone channel coverage since 2009.
If you're an NFL fan and RedZone consumer, it's hard, maybe even impossible, to imagine the channel without Hanson leading the way. However, according to a new report, there's a legitimate chance the 53-year-old Syracuse University alum could be working elsewhere in the near future.
Front Office Sports reported Thursday that Hanson has been negotiating with NBC Sports regarding "a wide-ranging job" that could include Olympics and NFL coverage. Hanson previously worked with NBCUniversal and Peacock during the 2024 Paris Olympics, leading the Gold Zone highlights coverage of the games.
"NBC is eying Hanson to return as Gold Zone’s primary primetime host for the 2026 Winter Olympics and possibly the 2028 Summer Olympics," said Front Office Sports' Mike McCarthy.
Hanson's contract with NFL Media expired after the season, but he is still in talks with the company about returning. However, those discussions have "stalled," according to McCarthy.
Hanson drew positive marks for his work on GoldZone, which isn't shocking considering how deftly he manages the RedZone desk every week during the NFL season.
"I don’t know if I should say this or not, but I demurred at first," Hanson told the Boston Globe about the GoldZone assignment. “I was daunted by the prospect of trying to take 39 sports and 329 medal events — some of which have no clocks, some of which start at all hours of the morning and evening, some of which have rules with which I am unfamiliar — and try and shuffle that deck of cards into the nice tidy package that we do on NFL RedZone that the audience loves.
“I was nervous about taking on the assignment, but [NBC Olympics executive producer] Molly [Solomon] persisted, and here we are today. I am thrilled to be a part of this team.”
