NFL running back Ameer Abdullah has completed a decade spent playing in the NFL. However, having not yet signed elsewhere for his 11th season, Abdullah is now joining a roster with training camps having started across the league.
Per Matt Zenitz at CBS Sports, Abdullah has signed with the San Francisco 49ers. That will send him even further out west as he joins what’s been a successful franchise as of late in the NFC West.
“The #49ers are signing running back Ameer Abdullah, sources tell @CBSSports,” Zenitz tweeted on Thursday.
Abdullah has had a 10-year career in the pros with the Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers, and then the past three seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders. In 141 career games, Abdullah has posted 1,994 rushing yards and eight touchdowns while catching 203 passes for 1,468 yards and 11 more scores. That brings him to a total of 3,462 yards from scrimmage for 19 touchdowns overall.
Most of that came early over the first three years of his career after being a second-round pick by the Lions. Last year with the Raiders, though, was his most productive since then as Abdullah posted 572 yards from scrimmage, 311 in rushing and 261 in receiving to finish top-five on the team in both, and five scores in 2024. Still, Abdullah, despite his work on offense and special teams for Vegas, didn’t end back up in Sin City, with the team entering a new tenure with hires at general manager and head coach, as he was still available on the market late into July.
As for San Francisco, this signing allows the 49ers to further reinforce the position at running back. Christian McCaffrey is one of the better players in the league when healthy, but with the ‘when healthy’ part of that becoming the focus with him having played in just four games last season. Because of that, RBs Isaac Guerendo and Jordan James have been key draft picks by the team in each of the last two offseasons and could make Abdullah an important signing as a veteran.
While being a career reserve to this point, Abdullah has made a productive role for himself in the NFL. That’ll continue this fall now as he heads out to back up in the backfield for the 49ers.
