Report: Brian Daboll believed to be favorite for Dolphins' head coach job

Brian Daboll is believed to one of the top head coaching candidates available this offseason, and according to one report, he could be headed to South Beach.

According to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, Daboll has emerged as the favorite to be the Dolphins' next head coach. The Bills' offensive coordinator has interview with multiple other teams, including the Bears and Giants.

Daboll recently completed a second interview with New York just days after the Bills were eliminated from the playoffs in a thrilling overtime showdown with the Chiefs. He interviewed with Miami on January 16.

Daboll has a known connection to the Dolphins' roster, as he coached quarterback Tua Tagovailoa as Alabama's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2017. The Dolphins seem committed to Tagovailoa as their quarterback for 2022, so it makes sense they'd be attracted to someone with a clear connection to the second-year signal caller.

After beginning his coaching career as in assistant in the college ranks, Daboll got his start in the NFL as a defensive assistant and wide receivers coach in New England from 2000-06. He then jumped to be the Jets' quarterbacks coach, a position he held for two seasons.

He got his first crack at an offensive coordinator role in 2009 with the Browns, and after two years was hired by the Dolphins in the same role under the late Tony Sparano. He spent just one year in Miami as he was not retained by new head coach Joe Philbin, instead taking over as the OC in Kansas City.

After one year with the Chiefs, Daboll was fired, and returned to the Patriots as tight ends coach. He spent four seasons there before his one-year stint at Alabama, then he returned to the NFL as the offensive coordinator in Buffalo. He's a five-time Super Bowl winning assistant, and has helped form one of the best offenses in the league around quarterback Josh Allen.
