Report: Cam Newton rejoining Patriots practice on Thursday

Cam Newton is back.

Field Yates (h/t Mike Reiss) of ESPN is reporting that the one-time regular season Most Valuable Player and current New England Patriots starting quarterback will return to the practice field on Thursday. The 31-year-old has been out of action since entering the reserve/COVID-19 list on Oct. 3 after he tested positive for the virus.

Newton missed New England's 26-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 5. Journeyman Brian Hoyer started that game under center for the Patriots and largely underwhelmed before he was replaced by Jarrett Stidham to finish the club's second defeat of the season.

The NFL rescheduled a game between the Patriots and Denver Broncos multiple times due to positive coronavirus tests among New England players. It's expected the Patriots will be cleared to face the Broncos this coming Sunday after both teams completed bye weeks.

Newton joined the Patriots in July to replace six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, who signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier in free agency. The former Carolina Panthers starting signal-caller impressed in his first three games with New England, as he passed for a pair of touchdowns, rushed for four more, and tallied 714 passing yards while completing 68.1% of his throws. Newton added 149 rushing yards in his first three games, two of which New England won.
