Report: Carson Wentz prefers Eagles trade him this offseason

Earlier this week, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni hinted at a quarterback competition between Carson Wentz and Jalen Hurts ahead of the 2021 season. Now it sounds like there might not need to be a competition at all.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Wentz would prefer a trade out of Philadelphia this offseason. However, Schefter says the Eagles don't want to trade the 28-year-old.

"They will listen," Schefter told John Kincade on 97.5 The Fanatic on Wednesday. "Absolutely listen. And if a team makes the right offer, there will be a trade that will be made. But if a team doesn't make the right offer, I think they'll be open to bringing him back and having him compete in camp with Jalen Hurts. To me, it could go either way ... Just because he would like to be moved doesn't mean he will be. If I had to guess, I would guess he is traded ... But again, they're not looking to get rid of him. They're not."

If the Eagles trade Wentz, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports that he prefers a move to the Indianapolis Colts. With Philip Rivers now in retirement and Jacoby Brissett set to enter free agency, there could be a real possibility Wentz ends up in Indy next season.

However, Colts head coach Frank Reich might not be interested in a reunion with Wentz, according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Reich worked as Philadelphia's offensive coordinator in 2016 and 2017 before becoming head coach of the Colts in 2018. He helped Wentz lead the Eagles to an 18-11 record and won a Super Bowl with Nick Foles under center for an injured Wentz in those two seasons.

Since Reich left for Indy, the Eagles have struggled offensively. Wentz was one of Philadelphia's major problems during the 2020 season. He had the worst season of his career, leading the NFL in interceptions and sacks. However, the franchise reportedly believes he can return to the quarterback he once was in 2017 when he went 11-2, hence why they don't want to trade him.
