Report: Cowboys 'close' to new deal with WR Michael Gallup

The Dallas Cowboys previously hinted at and have since been linked with a parting-of-the-ways with wide receiver Amari Cooper, who is currently owed $20 million in cash that otherwise becomes fully guaranteed on March 20.

It appears Dallas is now working on locking down a different target, likely at a discounted rate.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Cowboys and wide receiver Michael Gallup are "close" to coming to terms on a new deal that would prevent him from hitting free agency when the new NFL year opens on March 16:

Gallup began this past September in a contract year but then suffered a calf strain in the season-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that ultimately kept him out of action until November. Brutal misfortune then stuck the 26-year-old on Jan. 2 when he went down with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Pro Football Talk's Charean Williams notes that Gallup didn't undergo surgery to repair his latest injury until Feb. 10, which puts his status for the 2022 Week 1 contest in question at this early point of his recovery.

Gallup recorded 35 receptions for 445 yards and two touchdowns across nine games this past campaign.
