Two weeks into the 2025 NFL season, the New York Giants find themselves in a position that has become all too common in recent years.
They are once again looking to bounce back from an 0-2 start to the year.
The Giants have lost their first two games in seven of their last nine seasons.
Most of those seasons have seen the Giants finish below .500.
Now it seems all of that losing is starting to get to one of their best players.
During a recent episode of his "Breaking Big Blue" podcast, ESPN's Jordan Raanan revealed that star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence is growing frustrated with the losing.
“You can see it building, little by little.”
Lawrence has been one of the few consistent bright spots during his time as a member of the Giants.
He has earned Pro Bowl honors in each of the last three season and received All-Pro nods in two of those years.
Last season he needed just 12 games to rack up nine sacks.
This year has started a bit slowly for him as he didn't record a sack in either game and has just three pressures according to Pro Football Focus.
He has been a part of seven total tackles, which puts him on pace to finish around his usual numbers and the rest of his stats should get back on track as the season progresses.
The problem is that there probably won't be much winning coming no matter how well Lawrence plays. The Giants face a brutal schedule this season and still have issues around their roster.
The Giants need to convince Lawrence that's going to change soon. They really can't afford to lose him as the centerpiece of their defensive line, which is currently the best part of the team and should remain as such for the foreseeable future.
There are reasons for hope for 2026. Jaxson Dart looked like the real deal in the preseason. Malik Nabers has proven to be a stud. The defensive line is loaded with talent. Some of the Giants' other young players have shown promise early.
The realization of the team's future potential feels far away right now as they struggle through another season, but if the Giants can get Lawrence to buy in for one more year then he should be rewarded by finally getting to experience some winning again.
If he decides he can't take the losing and tries to force his way out of East Rutherford, it would be a mess for the Giants.
