REPORT: Giants to Aggressively Pursue Jaylen Waddle via Trade

Long-time NFL reporter Connor Hughes, who covers the Jets and the Giants for SNY TV in New York City, is reporting the NY Giants will be aggressive in pursuit of adding a receiver before the trade deadline, and will be “big game hunting” with one of the top names they are interested in, being Jaylen Waddle.

Per Hughes’s reporting, the Giants feel an influx into the WR position would help the development of quarterback Jaxson Dart.

Per Hughes: “Multiple sources familiar with the discussions told SNY that New York has been aggressive in its pursuit of adding a pass catcher for rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart.”

Currently, Giants superstar WR Malik Nabers is out for the season with a knee injury, and Darius Slayton is missing time with a hamstring injury. So, the Giants in the short term need help at the position, and in the long term would like to find a piece to complement Nabers next season.

Hughes reports: Chris Olave (Saints), Jaylen Waddle (Dolphins) and Jakobi Meyers (Raiders) are among the top potential targets….

Waddle would be the most high-profile addition. The former first-round pick has 29 receptions for 390 yards and three touchdowns this season. He opened his career with three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, including 1,356 yards and eight touchdowns in 2022. He turns 27 in November.”

The Dolphins recently lost Tyreek Hill for the season. Because of his contract and Miami’s salary cap situation, trading away Waddle would be a sign that they are waving the white flag and blowing up this roster and going all in on a full and total rebuild.

The problem the Dolphins may have in trading Waddle at this time is whether to let Chris Grier make that type of move.

If you let Grier make that trade, it is a sign that he will probably be in Miami beyond this season, either as the GM or a Sr. Advisor to Football Operations or in an executive role in some capacity.

Suppose you fire Grier now or go around him. In that case, you’re essentially letting an interim GM make a significant trade that will have immediate ramifications for the roster and organization in the coming years.

Then you have to factor in what is fair trade compensation for Waddle.

I think if any team offered a first-round pick for Waddle, then Miami would be silly not to consider trading him. But is Waddle worth a first-round pick in return?

Probably not.

So, now Miami is looking at best at a 2nd round pick plus something else?

A 2nd and a 4th?

A 2nd and a 5th?

A 2nd and a player who can come in and start at a position of need, maybe?

Maybe a 2nd, 4th, and a 6th?

The other question is whether Miami would put Waddle on the trade block, and if so, how many teams, aside from the NY Giants, would be interested.

Could Miami start a bidding war to drive up the Giants’ price or secure a better deal from another team?

If I were the Miami Dolphins today, I would not be openly shopping Waddle, but if a team called with an offer too good to turn down, you have to listen and consider.
