Early retirements in the NFL have become more en vogue in recent years, as players come to terms with the realities of playing in the league for a long time. Add Los Angeles Chargers receiver Mike Williams to the list.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Williams’ agent Tory Dandy informed the team on Wednesday night that his client is retiring from the NFL. Williams is 30 years old.

The veteran receiver spent eight years in the league, racking up 330 catches for 5,104 yards and 32 touchdowns. He also ran 10 times for 34 yards and a score.

Mike Williams had not started double-digit games in his last two seasons, as injuries took a significant toll. He played for three different NFL teams during his career, spending his first seven years with the Chargers before splitting time between two different teams in his final year.

Williams most recently played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, spending nine games with the squad after playing nine games for the New York Jets. He had 12 catches for 166 yards with the Jets before he landed with the Steelers.

The Williams trade from the Jets to the Steelers actually happened during Aaron Rodgers‘ weekly appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. That allowed the Jets quarterback to react in real-time right after the news surfaced.

“Mike’s a quiet guy, just kind of goes about his business,” Rodgers said. “Mike had a rough injury last year, that ACL, it’s tough to come back from and he worked his ass off all offseason. Wasn’t around for a lot of training camp, he was working on the side, but I felt like he was getting better throughout the early part of the season.

“Feel like his speed was getting better and he was feeling more comfortable with it. That’s a tough injury, I had that injury and it’s the mental part that takes the longest.”

Mike Williams would go on to record nine catches for 132 yards and a touchdown for the Steelers. It would be his last action in the NFL, apparently.

According to Spotrac, Williams made just more than $84 million during his NFL career across three separate contracts. That’s a significant haul and should set the veteran up for life.
