REPORT: Miami May Have Interest in Kyler Murray
NFL Insider Albert Breer reports that the Miami Dolphins may have interest in signing free agent quarterback Kyler Murray.
Breer said: “The obvious one, as we said earlier, is Minnesota. Who else? Well, the Jets could potentially give him a shot to start, and the Dolphins might be interested. Getting him at the minimum for a year would make sense for a team carrying all the Tua Tagovailoa money into 2026 (after presumably cutting him). The Colts and Falcons are in a separate category.”
On the surface one may think Murray to Miami makes no sense as Miami is rebuilding, but the fact that Arizona is picking up the bulk of Murray’s contract and it will only cost a team the veteran minimum to sign Murray which is a little over one million dollars, then Murray to Miami makes all the sense in the world given Miami’s salary cap situation.
The issue for Miami landing Murray will be that Murray will have options and a chance to start on a competitive team with a chance to possibly compete for a Super Bowl.
Such as Minnesota, Pittsburgh, and Indianapolis.
But Minnesota has JJ McCarthy, the Steelers could bring back Aaron Rodgers, and the Colts appear to be keeping Daniel Jones, and who knows if Murray will see any of those landing spots as desirable.
While in Miami, in South Florida, with no state income tax and nice weather, he will clearly be the starting quarterback on a team with no expectations and no pressure.
Could that be an attractive situation for Murray to look to turn around his career?
The Jets are also an option, but it’s the Jets, and will Murray want to be under the microscope of the New York City media and a coach entering the season on the hot seat?
Murray will be 29 in August and is the former first-overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
He has played in 87 games during his career, starting all 87.
His team is 38-48-1 when he starts a game at quarterback, and for his career, he has thrown 121 touchdowns to only 60 interceptions.
Murray has also rushed for 32 touchdowns in his career as well.
Last season, Murray only played in 5 games before suffering a foot injury that ultimately ended his season.
He finished the season with 6 touchdowns, 3 interceptions, and a completion % of 68%.
The year prior in 2024, Murray started all 17 games, Arizona went 8-9, and he threw for 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Murray was the 2019 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and has been voted to the Pro Bowl twice.
Compared to Malik Willis, Murray would be a much cheaper alternative. Plus, because Arizona is paying the bulk of his contract, it would be a 1-year deal, as Murray would want to be a free agent next offseason, looking to cash in again.
So, on a lot of levels, it does make sense for Miami to have interest; the issue is, Murray will be sought after when free agency starts next week, and Miami may not be the situation he is looking for.
On the other hand, it may be the perfect situation for him.
We should have an idea next week when the legal tampering period begins.
