Report: Myles Garrett contract includes record $100 million guaranteed

Wise or not, the Cleveland Browns proved they trust defensive end Myles Garrett will remain on his best behavior while still rushing quarterbacks for years to come.

Roughly eight months after Garrett earned a six-game suspension for bashing Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph in the head with his helmet, the Browns awarded the 24-year-old with a historic deal. What was reported on Tuesday to be a five-year contract potentially worth up to $125 million contains $100 million in guarantees, a record for any defensive player, and a yearly salary of $25 million, per ESPN's Jake Trotter

Chicago Bears linebacker Khalil Mack ($23 million per year, $90 million guaranteed) was previously the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL until Garrett officially put pen to paper on the extension.

Garrett's talent is undeniable. He tallied 30.5 sacks across his first 37 career regular-season appearances. As Kevin Boilard of CBS Sports tweeted last November, though, Garrett developed a reputation for being a dirty player following multiple incidents throughout the 2019 campaign:

Moving forward, Garrett and the Browns must realize he's one misstep away from potentially facing a lengthy ban that could cost both player and club more than just money.
