Report: NFL pushed Green Bay Packers to propose ‘Tush Push’ ban

The Green Bay Packers submitted the proposal to ban the tush push. But did the NFL put them up to it? According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the league asked the Packers to propose a ban on the play used mostly by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Florio said most people in the Packers organization did not care about the play either way. On Wednesday, the NFL team owners voted 22-10 to ban the tush push. But since 24 votes are needed for a proposal to pass, the tush push will be legal for the 2025 season.

Shortly before the vote, the Packers submitted a revision of the tush push proposal. It was first submitted earlier this year, and the owners were going to vote for it at the league meetings in April. But the owners tabled the vote until the meetings in Minneapolis this week.

Packers president weighs in on the ‘Tush Push’

The report from Florio is interesting since the Packers have spoken out about the play. “I think it ended up in a good place,” Packers president Mark Murphy said after the meetings in April.

“We ended up tabling it, but we had a really good discussion, talked a little bit about our safety concerns regarding the play, just kind of the style of the play, but good interaction with the league and so it’ll be tabled and then what we’re going to do is it’ll be voted on in the May meeting and so we’re going to go — in 2005, the league did away with the rule that you couldn’t push runners and so we’re going to go back and see the language that we had in 2004 and I’m optimistic. I think there’s enough people that kind of look at it and say it’s really not good for the game, it’s more a rugby play than a football play, just kind of go back to what used to be the rule.”

According to ESPN, the tush push appeared in just 0.28 percent of total plays in 2024. The Eagles and the Buffalo Bills used the play the most, combining to run 163 pushes in the last three seasons.
