Report: Steelers Sign Former Texans Safety Grayland Arnold
Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers have had an impressive 2024 offseason, strengthening all three facets of the game. Despite the significant additions, the team continues to enhance their roster depth with lesser-known talents.

On Tuesday, NFL insider Mike Garafolo reported that the Steelers are signing defensive back Grayland Arnold. While this isn't a major move and Arnold's role in Pittsburgh remains uncertain, his addition brings valuable experience to the team's secondary.

Arnold has played in the NFL for four seasons, beginning his career with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he spent one year. In August 2021, the Eagles waived Arnold, re-added him to the practice squad, and eventually waived him again in September 2021.

Two weeks after his release from the Eagles, Arnold joined the Houston Texans' practice squad. Over three seasons with the Texans, he moved between the active roster and practice squad. Arnold has appeared in 26 NFL games, starting in just one. Throughout his career, he has accumulated 33 tackles, one forced fumble, and one pass defensed.

Steelers' Grayland Arnold Is A Versatile Defensive Back

Arnold has faced challenges in his NFL career, frequently moving between being waived and joining practice squads. This pattern may continue in Pittsburgh. The Steelers are seeking help at the nickelback position, and while Arnold is listed as a safety, he has played cornerback for three of his four seasons.

Arnold could compete for a roster spot and potentially secure a backup role in Pittsburgh. While not a high-profile signing, acquiring a player with a few seasons of NFL experience at a low cost is beneficial. His contract details have not yet been disclosed. This move adds depth to the Steelers' roster and provides the team with additional options in the secondary.

Arnold's versatility, having played both safety and cornerback, may prove valuable as the Steelers look to bolster their secondary. Despite his challenging journey in the NFL, Arnold has the potential to make a more meaningful contribution in Pittsburgh.
