Report: Texans not currently open to trading quarterback

When the Houston Texans drafted C.J. Stroud with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 draft, many expected the team’s incumbent starting quarterback Davis Mills to become expendable.

And as KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson is reporting, the Texans have received some calls from other teams inquiring about possibly trading for Mills.

“Although there is trade interest in Mills, a former third-round draft pick from Stanford, he is unavailable, according to league sources,” Wilson wrote.

While Stroud will be Houston’s starting QB at some point, first-year head coach DeMeco Ryans made it clear that he wouldn’t just be handed the starting job. And in Mills’ eyes, it’s very much an open competition.

“I’m competing for that starting job,” Mills said, via Fox 26’s Mark Berman. “Since I’ve been drafted in the NFL, I’ve been in a competition. I don’t think anything is going to change. It’s been great getting to know C.J. so far. He’s an extremely hard worker and it will be good to see how we go out there every day and make each other better.”

Though Davis may be unavailable right now, Houston’s quarterback situation is one to keep an eye on. Stroud is clearly the team’s franchise guy and the Texans signed 10-year veteran Case Keenum to be a mentor as he transitions to the NFL.

Mills, 24, has plenty of starting experience for a quarterback who has not yet begun his third season and he is still young enough that Houston likely doesn’t want to move on from him so hastily. But it’s also unlikely that the Texans would carry three quarterbacks on their roster.
