With training camp on the horizon, the New Orleans Saints agreed to contract terms with Tyler Shough. He is set to sign a fully guaranteed four-year, $10.8 million contract, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.
As the No. 40 overall pick, Shough’s contract is the last fully guaranteed deal from the 2025 NFL Draft, according to Schefter. TJ Sanders – the No. 41 overall pick – had 94% of guaranteed money in his contract.
The Saints selected Shough out of Louisville following a standout season under Jeff Brohm. He threw for 3,195 yards and 23 touchdowns as a seventh-year senior, and he became a sought-after prospect through the pre-draft process.
Now in New Orleans, Shough will be part of a quarterback competition with the Saints following Derek Carr’s retirement. He will go up against Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler for the job in a battle that’s expected to go through training camp, new coach Kellen Moore said in May.
“All three quarterbacks, we’re going to let all three of these guys roll,” Moore said. “They’ve all earned these opportunities. We’ll let Jake, Spencer and Tyler – all three – go through this process. We’ll play patience, let these guys compete, let them get into training camp.”
Injuries were a big concern around Shough ahead of the draft, considering he dealt with multiple issues during his time at Oregon, Texas Tech and Louisville. However, his arm talent and accuracy helped him jump out to scouts and make him an intriguing prospect despite the fact that he turns 26 in the fall, according to NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein.
“Pocket passer with a seven-year college career prompted by three consecutive years of injuries while at Texas Tech,” Zierlein wrote. “Shough will turn 26 in September, was in the same recruiting class as Trevor Lawrence and backed up Justin Herbert at Oregon. He’s a talented passer with a live arm who is capable of making pro throws, both intermediate and deep, but battles inconsistency.
“He plays with good field vision, using his eyes to hold defenders and set up his throwing windows. Shough is confident and accurate when protected, but will flinch when pressure mounts, leading to spotty decision-making and big sacks. His size and passing talent will be enticing, but durability and mobility concerns are impediments he will need to overcome.”
