Report: WFT currently doesn't plan to sign Cam Newton

The New England Patriots released Cam Newton two weeks ago after deciding that he wasn’t going to be their starter for the 2021-22 NFL season.

By all accounts the Patriots had very good reasons to kick Newton to the curb, but he didn’t see it that way. Instead, the former league MVP said he felt "bamboozled" by the team. Things go so bad that, this week, Belichick had to come out and address it.

In the immediate aftermath, the big question became: Where does Newton go from here?

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Washington Football team has no immediate plans to sign Newton:

“Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Washington Football Team isn’t there yet with Newton.

“If Fitzpatrick is out, Taylor Heinicke becomes the starter and Kyle Allen becomes the backup. If the injury bug continues to bite, things could change. One big factor, as previously mentioned, would be the status of the relationship between Newton and coaches who currently are with Washington and who previously were with Carolina, when Newton was there.”

Last year, when Newton was running their offense, the Patriots literally had opposing teams openly mocking and ridiculing them. That’s not great. This past Friday, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones described in great detail why his team passed on 32-year-old.

The fact that not even Ron Rivera is willing to go out on a limb for Newton at this stage is telling. Maybe he’ll ultimately find a landing spot, but it probably won’t happen any time soon.
