Revisiting The Original Minkah Fitzpatrick Trade: Did the Pittsburgh Steelers receive a ROI after giving up a first-round pick?
Kirby Lee-Imagn

It seems like just yesterday that the Pittsburgh Steelers got out of character and made a bold trade for Minkah Fitzpatrick.

In reality, though, it will be six years this fall that he Steelers traded a first-round pick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

And while it's too early to determine who won the trade from this week, we can certainly determine the winner of the one in 2019...

Steelers receive great ROI on Minkah Fitzpatrick

Back in 2019, the Steelers made the rare move to part ways with a first round pick. In return, the team received Minkah Fitzpatrick. All he went on to do was go on a four-year run between the 2019 and 2022 NFL seasons, where he looked like the best safety in the league.

During that time, Fitzpatrick accrued three Pro Bowl appearances, three first team All-Pro selections and a whopping 17 interceptions. Heck, even the last two seasons, where Fitzpatrick clearly took a step back from that production, saw him earn another two Pro Bowl selections.

As for the Dolphins, they used the 18th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft , the first rounder the Steelers gave up, to select tackle Austin Jackson who has started for the Dolphins, but is nowhere close to the caliber of player that Minkah was in Pittsburgh.

So, to get what they did out of him and then flip him after two down years for two Pro Bowlers when you weren't going to pay Minkah what he would want next offseason anyway, I think it's more than fair to say the Steelers' brass nailed the Minkah Fitzpatrick experience in Pittsburgh.

Would you have liked to see more playoff success during his time? Of course. But this is a safety were talking about. One of the more devaualed positions in the league.

Minkah did more than what the Steelers could have hoped for during his tenure.
