Rex Ryan Reveals the Only NFL Player He 'Ever Backed Down From' After Jaguars-49ers Scuffle

The San Francisco 49ers and Jacksonville Jaguars took the field on Sunday in a game that most thought would go the 49ers' way.

The Jaguars wound up winning with a 26-21 victory on the road at Levi's Stadium, site of 2026's Super Bowl.

The game included a dust-up between 49ers assistant coach Robert Saleh and Jaguars head coach Liam Coen that caused Jaguars center Robert Hainsy to hold back his head coach from going after the 49ers coach.

ESPN's Damien Woody, Rex Ryan and others tackled the topic of Saleh vs. Cohen in a hypothetical matchup that had Ryan sharing a surprising story.

Ryan Shares Hilarious Brandon Jacobs Story

Ryan responded to Woody's comments that Saleh is "swole" and that it might not have been the best idea for Coen to go after him.

"First of all, he don't want that smoke with Saleh," Woody said. "Like Saleh is swole bro. I know Coen has a little bit of piss and vinegar about him, but you don't want that smoke with Robert Saleh. I'm telling you," Woody added.

Ryan was asked by ESPN host Mike Greenberg about whether or not these types of dust-ups happen often without fans and media knowing.

"It's not gonna happen to me because I'd be layin' hands," Ryan said. "And I know I'm not very...I'm 62 years old but I'd be layin' hands right there," he said.

"The only one I ever backed down from was that Brandon Jacobs, when I'm like...this is a big bubba," Ryan said, looking upward and reenacting what it felt like to look up at the former NFL running back, who measured 6-feet-4 inches tall and weighed in at 264 pounds.

"I never backed down...You know I didn't, and I was like, 'Damn, that is one big dude,'" Ryan continued.

49ers Hit Road to Take on Rams

Next up for the 49ers is a road contest against Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford's LA Rams at 8:15 p.m. ET this Thursday.

The 49ers and Rams are tied for the NFC West lead at 3-1 on the season with the Cardinals looking up at them with a 2-2 record.

The Jaguars also have a tough task on their hands with the Chiefs coming to town for a Monday, Oct. 6 clash next week on Monday Night Football.

Ryan's former team, the New York Jets, trailed the Miami Dolphins by a score of 10-0 as of Monday night in Miami.
