The New England Patriots are at a crossroads following a challenging 2024 season that ended with the dismissal of head coach Jerod Mayo. The former Patriots linebacker faced significant obstacles in his first year in charge.
Under Mayo’s leadership, the Patriots finished 4-13 for the second consecutive season, marking one of the team’s worst stretches in decades. Despite his long-standing ties to the organization as a player and assistant coach, Mayo’s time as head coach was defined by struggles both on and off the field.
While the decision to part ways with Mayo has sparked discussion, former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski offered a straightforward perspective. According to Gronkowski, the Patriots’ issues run deeper than coaching and stem from broader cultural challenges within the organization, adding that he believes Mayo faced an unfair situation.
“I don’t care what coach you would’ve had there,” said Gronkowski on the Up and Adams show. “They would’ve only won 4, 5, 6 games maximum.”

Mayo’s tenure was marked by notable struggles on defense, a surprising development given his expertise in that area. However, Gronkowski highlighted how the team’s culture and performance trends likely influenced owner Robert Kraft’s decision to move on.
“They started getting blown out, losing by three touchdowns, not even competing in the games,” Gronkowski added. “That’s when I feel like it gave that bad taste in Mr. Kraft’s mouth that coach Jerod wasn’t the guy because they were just tanking mid to end of the season.”
As Kraft and the Patriots look ahead to the future, the organization has begun its search for a new head coach. Former Patriots linebacker and ex-Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel has emerged as a leading candidate, with Kraft reportedly prioritizing a cultural reset to restore the franchise’s winning tradition.
While Mayo’s time as head coach was brief, his legacy as a player and assistant coach remains an integral part of Patriots history. Gronkowski’s remarks underscore the challenges of coaching in New England’s high-pressure environment, especially in the shadow of Bill Belichick’s legendary tenure.
