Throughout his 11-year playing career in the NFL, Rob Gronkowski developed a reputation as a "party king" of sorts. His vibrant and fun-loving personality was evident in plenty of viral moments, such as his beer-chugging antics while wearing a minion hat in the 2015 Super Bowl parade and his jersey-stealing act with Tom Brady during the Boston Red Sox's home opener in 2017.
Gronk has backed up his fun personality with his elite athleticism and on-field performance. He's a four-time Super Bowl champion and five-time Pro Bowler, establishing himself as one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history—if not the best.
Despite his athletic success, though, Gronkowski is well aware that he has created a "dumb jock" persona because of his antics on and off the field. However, while he has admittedly "played into that character" sometimes, he emphasized that he's more than just that.
"People thought I was just a dumb jock, and it’s been like that throughout my entire life," Gronkowski told Forbes. "Sometimes it takes me a little bit longer to figure things out as well, but I always know what’s going on around me. So I played into that character sometimes—not all times, but when it was necessary."
For what it's worth, Gronkowski's approach to life and personality have helped him develop a personal brand that earns him a lot of money per year. As Forbes noted, his endorsements, broadcasting work at Fox, as well as other speaking engagements and hosting deals bring him an estimated $10 million per year.
During his time in the NFL, Gronk pocketed a little over $70 million in salary earnings, according to Spotrac. That being said, he is on track to eclipse his total NFL pay in his post-retirement career.
In the same report by Forbes, Gronkowski's former New England Patriots teammate Julian Edelman refuted the impression that many people get about the legendary tight end. According to him, Gronk "really critically thinks over everything" and is not the "big caveman" many people think he is.
"He is very tight. He’s very detail-oriented. He’s not afraid to ask questions," Edelman further stated about Gronk.
While Gronk lives the fun life, that doesn't mean that he's careless and doesn't understand what he's doing. Clearly, he knows very well what he needs to do with his personal brand and image.
