Roger Goodell comments on a potential Super Bowl in Nashville: 'We know the passion of the fans here'
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The projected timeline of February 27, 2027 for the Tennessee Titans' new stadium was revealed on Tuesday. On Wednesday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell discussed the idea of Nashville eventually hosting a Super Bowl.

"I think the [Titans' new] stadium is going to be amazing," Goodell told reporters Wednesday. "We know the passion of the fans, here. We experienced the draft and I think a Super Bowl, here, would be very successful. But we'll get to that once we get a little further down the line with the stadium."

The idea of a Super Bowl in Music City was always considered farfetched until Indianapolis and New Jersey showed they were capable of hosting the big game. As Goodell stated, Nashville set the bar for the draft until Detroit surpassed it in 2024 and the city continues to grow every year. By the time the 2027 season rolls around -and beyond- it's safe to assume things will be even bigger and there will be more hotels and infrastructure to give the NFL what it needs.

The league has pretty strict and hefty prerequisites when it comes to picking Super Bowl hosts. There are the well-known requirements, such as the hosting venue must have a seating capacity of at least 70,000 (or allow for temporary expanded seating to meet the threshold) and the game has to take place in regions where the average temperature over a 10-year period is 50 degrees or warmer. Unless the NFL grants a waiver or the game is held in a climate-controlled domed stadium.

Then there are the strange prerequisites, such as providing the use of three "top quality 18-hole golf courses" and two "top quality" bowling lanes as additional facilities needed at no cost to the league - on top of plenty of other items that probably aren't the first ones that come to mind.

Hosting a Super Bowl would be yet another impressive feather in Nashville's cap, but it would undoubtedly be a major undertaking. Still, there's little to no reason to think the city couldn't pull it off and when listening to Goodell, it sounds like it's more of a matter of "when" and not "if".
