Russell Wilson after extension: 'This team is really special'

The Broncos locked in Russell Wilson until 2028 on Thursday. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Broncos and Wilson agreed to a five-year, $245 million extension that includes $165 million in guaranteed money.

Wilson is now the second-highest paid quarterback in the NFL behind Aaron Rodgers.

“My goal is to finish my career here,” Wilson said in a news conference on Thursday. “This team is really special. As I mentioned in the beginning this team is unique, it’s dedicated to the craft and we have an amazing journey ahead of us.”

The Broncos have several young prospects who could turn into future stars. Wilson highlighted cornerback Patrick Surtain II, wideout Jerry Jeudy and running back Javonte Williams as reasons to believe in the Broncos.

The Broncos problem hasn’t been talent. According to Pro Football Focus, they had a top-10 roster heading into 2021. It’s been putting it all together. Of course, the quarterback position has had a lot to do with it as well. The Broncos have dwelled in last place in the AFC West for two years now, winning just two divisional games.

Wilson won a Super Bowl in Seattle and was a nine-time Pro Bowler. The hope is that he is the last piece they need to solve their puzzle.

Head coach Nathaniel Hackett has been having fun working with Wilson, and now he gets to see if the Broncos’ investment works.

“It’s been an absolute blast,” Hackett said during Thursday's news conference. “Now it’s time to get this season going.”
