PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin revealed on Tuesday that quarterback Russell Wilson is in consideration to start this week. Tomlin said that Russell Wilson proved his health last week and is deemed fully healthy.

According to Tom Pelisserro of NFL Network, the Steelers plan to give Wilson first-team reps in practice this week, putting him in line to make his season debut and start Sunday night against the  New York Jets.

Tomlin said it is up for consideration as to who will take first team reps at practice starting on Wednesday.

“I don’t know. Closer to game time,” Tomlin said when asked the timetable to name a starting quarterback for Sunday night’s game. “Looking for top quality play and winning. Russ proved himself last week. He proved his ability to protect himself, move appropriately in the pocket and not be limited schematically.”

Tomlin said there’s a chance that the Steelers use both quarterbacks this Sunday. He also explained that Fields has provided quality play, but they’re keeping their options open with inserting Wilson into the lineup.

“Sometimes it’s not about what Justin has done or has not done,” Tomlin said.

Tomlin said the “totality” of Wilson’s resume is the reason for a possible change. “We’re trying to position ourselves to be that (top) team.”

Wilson has been dealing with a lingering calf injury since the start of training camp. He re-injured his calf at the Thursday practice prior to the season opener against the Atlanta Falcons. He was inactive for the first five games. He was the No. 2 quarterback against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.
