Ryan Tannehill Pinpoints “Consistency” as Problem for Dolphins
The 2025 NFL campaign has been a rocky rollercoaster, if nothing else, for the Miami Dolphins. For the most part, they’ve played solid football on both sides over their last three games. They are winners of two of their last three contests, but that mini-winning stretch was preceded by a cataclysmic opening seven weeks.
So, it’s an accurate assessment that the Dolphins’ quality of play has been inconsistent this season. That’s exactly the assessment former Miami signal-caller Ryan Tannehill — a former first-round pick by the Dolphins — made. He said consistency is “huge” at the highest level and that “it’s going to be hard” for any team to stack up victories if it isn’t bringing its A-game weekly.
“Haven’t sat down and studied the tape and really dove into it, but I’ve briefly watched parts of a few games and from what I watched, I can’t put it on one thing,” Tannehill said. “It seems to be a few different things. Its consistency I think is huge. You play in a tough league and if you’re not playing the best football each and every week, then it’s going to be hard to come up with a win. You got to be consistent and make big plays when it counts. I’m not sure what their injury list has been this year, and what that looks like. But it’s a tough league to win in and if you don’t go out and play good football week in and week out, it’s gonna be hard to come away with wins.”
Perhaps no single stat better epitomizes the 2025 Dolphins’ inconsistency than the fact that they haven’t won consecutive games yet. They will have a chance to pick up their second win in a row and first winning streak of the campaign against the Washington Commanders, though whether they’ll capitalize on that opportunity isn’t clear.
While it is true that two of the Commanders’ top offensive playmakers — quarterback Jayden Daniels and wide receiver Terry McLaurin — won’t be playing, Sunday’s game is in Spain, and the Dolphins have historically fared terribly in international games.
They’re 1-5 all-time outside the U.S., with their one win coming over the Las Vegas (then Oakland) Raiders back in 2014. Ironically enough, none other than Tannehill was Miami’s starting quarterback in that game, and he threw for 278 yards.
Ultimately, the Dolphins can make Tannehill eat his words by consistently playing winning football the rest of the way. That means winning their Commanders bout and plenty more games to wrap up the season. Perhaps if any team around the league with such a poor record can rally back in the playoff race, it’s the Dolphins, who made that historic season turnaround back in the 2021 campaign.
