Saints Announce Final Roster Decision On Derek Carr

The New Orleans Saints got quite a shock a few weeks ago when quarterback Derek Carr announced that he would be retiring. But they still have roster moves to make before training camp and setting Carr's status for the 2025 season is one of them.

According to NFL insider Mike Garafolo, the Saints moved Carr to the reserve/retired list. The team also placed veteran wide receiver Trent Taylor on injured reserve.

As a result, if Carr changes his mind and comes out of retirement, the Saints will retain his contract rights. The team would have to release him from the reserve/retired list for him to sign elsewhere.

"Among the official moves on today’s transaction wire: The #Saints placed Derek Carr on the reserve/retired list and the #49ers put WR Trent Taylor on IR," Garafolo wrote.

Some Saints fans are happy to know that the Carr era is over, while others are already wondering what the team's next move will be:

"Can't lie. Today has been a pretty good day for me!!" one user replied.

"I’m officially free from the curse of the used Carr," another declared.

"Long time coming, but it's officially official," a third wrote.

"Odds they trade for (Kirk) Cousins?" wondered another.

Carr's tenure in New Orleans ends at just 27 games and a 14-13 record. The former Las Vegas Raiders Pro Bowler simply couldn't overcome the state that the team was left in when he arrived and got hurt in the second half of his second season.

In his two seasons for the team, Carr put up decent numbers, throwing for 6,023 yards and 40 touchdowns with just 13 interceptions. He completed 68.2-percent of his passes - an average only slightly surpassed by Drew Brees.

But despite having a few flashes of greatness with the Saints, he never came close to being the follow-up act to Brees.
