Saints Announce Tight End Signing Ahead of 49ers Clash
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Veteran tight end Jack Stoll's time with the New Orleans Saints isn't over just yet.

The Saints signed Stoll, a five-year veteran from Nebraska, to the 53-man roster ahead of their Week 2 duel with the San Francisco 49ers. Stoll spent the offseason on the Saints' 90-man roster but was cut and re-signed to the practice squad in late August.

Stoll played 18 offensive snaps (24%) and nine special teams snaps (33%) in last Sunday's loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler did not target Stoll.

We'll see how much longer Stoll sticks around in New Orleans. NFL rules allow a team to promote a player from the practice squad three times before they're required to either cut or sign the player to their active roster.

Stoll began his career with the Philadelphia Eagles, hauling in 22 catches for 193 yards across three-plus seasons. However, Stoll saw most of his offensive action as an additional run blocker for star quarterback Jalen Hurts and the Eagles' various running backs.

NFL Media's Lance Zierlein correctly predicted in a pre-draft scouting report that Stoll would be on a roster if he proved his blocking skills. Indeed, Stoll quickly became a mainstay on offense and special teams.

"He plays with good route speed, has soft hands and is a very physical run finisher," Zierlein wrote in 2021. "He lacks desired size and strength to be an in-line blocker, so he might need to work as an H-back."

The Eagles waived Stoll last November, though, and he closed the season playing four games for the Miami Dolphins.
