The New Orleans Saints have brought their wide receiver count to seven. Their latest move was claiming a former division foe off of waivers to create even more competition in a crowded, yet competitive, position group.
According to the team, the Saints have claimed wide receiver Trey Palmer off waivers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Palmer has impressive speed and some special teams upside.
Trey Palmer is a good player. Elite speed and a Louisiana native. Saints have gotten a good look at him with the Bucs the last few seasons.

Hard to believe the Saints keep 7 WRs tho ... feels like a cut has to be coming there.
The addition of Palmer won't affect the top end of the depth chart at wideout for New Orleans, but his profile does push Cedrick Wilson Jr. back into the limelight of the roster bubble. New Orleans has already shaved their roster to a 53-man unit for Week 1, but adjustments can still be made ahead of their game against the Arizona Cardinals.
Bringing Palmer in only provides a speedster who can earn more playing time if he proves he can be relied upon for Kellen Moore and co. this season. Palmer is also a Louisiana native.
I discussed Palmer's potential role and impact and why Tampa let him go as rosters cut down this week with Buccaneers beat Evan Winter.
"Trey Palmer quickly fell out of favor in Liam Coen's offense in 2024 and he simply couldn't stay healthy enough to try and make a good impression in 2025's training camp and the preseason. With the emergence of Jalen McMillan toward the end of last year and the addition of Emeka Egbuka, it was always going to be an uphill climb for Palmer to make the roster.
What he can do for the Saints is stretch the field using his 4.33 speed and that's useful in today's NFL. He's a guy you have to scheme open, but he can be effective when the ball is in hands. The only problem the ball just didn't find him in 2024.
Overall, he'd make a solid WR6-7 or a practice squad player that can still develop with time. It's just going to be at a lot slower of a pace than what it looked like after 2023." -- Evan Winter, A to Z Sports

Palmer immediately presents competition for Wilson's role due to his special teams prowess. Devaughn Vele, a recent trade acquisition placed pressure on Wilson since he was an additional big-bodied wide receiver joining the squad. Now, the Saints have acquired multiple targets that do or possess what Wilson Jr. is known for over the past week.
