Saints rookie wide receiver Jordyn Tyson is finally closing in on his NFL debut. Tyson, who has been on IR with a hamstring injury all season, will return to practice on Wednesday, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports. The Saints will have 21 days to activate Tyson.
New Orleans designated Tyson for return when the team finalized its initial 53-man roster in late August. As a result, he is already accounting for one of the Saints’ IR activations. Teams are allowed eight during the regular season, and the Saints have used four.
Tyson strained his hamstring in training camp, adding to a rash of injuries he has suffered since his college days. The 6-foot-2, 203-pounder tore his ACL, MCL and PCL as a freshman at Colorado in 2022, and after transferring to Arizona State, he missed most of the next season while recovering. Tyson excelled when healthy over the past two years, during which he earned a pair of first-team All-Big 12 nods, but he broke his collarbone late in 2024 and battled nagging hamstring injuries last season.
While Tyson’s hamstring troubles prevented him from participating in drills during the Combine and at Arizona State’s pro day, he was able to hold a workout for NFL teams shortly before April’s draft. The 22-year-old clearly impressed the Saints, who drafted him with the eighth overall pick. The team’s hope then was that Tyson would break out as a quality complement to No. 1 receiver Chris Olave in 2026. Instead, the Saints have yet to get any contributions from Tyson during a disappointing 2-5 start.
Receiver Devaughn Vele and tight end Juwan Johnson have been quarterback Tyler Shough’s go-to options behind Olave, but Tyson could factor in as early as this Sunday against the Browns. If Tyson returns and quickly justifies his draft slot, it could go a long way in helping the Saints put up a fight in the winnable NFC South. New Orleans is in last place, yet the club is still alive in a derby that includes three other sub-.500 teams in Carolina (3-4), Tampa Bay (3-5) and Atlanta (3-5).
