The Detroit Lions didn't enjoy the cleanest night on offense amid a tough 30-17 road loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, but that didn't mean there weren't a few bright spots to be witnessed.
Jameson Williams reintroduced himself to the end zone, and put together a very solid six catch, 66 yard night. Running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery combined for 98 yards on the ground, and were very effective grinding out yards in the first-half.
Most impressively, though, tight end Sam LaPorta has quietly become a major force in the last two weeks. After a major one touchdown, 92 yard effort against the Cincinnati Bengals, LaPorta once again showed up in primetime against Kansas City.
Early and often, he was a featured target in the offense. John Morton used LaPorta's skills effectively on the outside and inside, and he was able to rack up an impressive five catches and 55 yards during the game. He also snagged a phenomenal touchdown in the back of the end zone which showed his ball skills and footwork.

LaPorta is a significant player moving forward this season for Detroit. The Lions offense always strives for balance, and the fact that he has come off the mat recently with 10 catches, 147 yards and two touchdowns after just 177 yards over the first four games is very significant.
That production points to a run game which is setting up the tight end for plenty of catches down the field and a solid play action game. LaPorta deserves credit for coming on strong and proving once again that he's a major target for the offense.
Perhaps the person most impressed by what LaPorta was able to do was Goff, the man who threw him the ball. With the Lions needing a touchdown to keep the game compelling in the second-half, Goff threw a fastball to the back of the end zone. What happened next was a welcome surprise according to the quarterback.
"(It was a) hell of a catch. I just threw it back there and tried to give him a chance. (It was) unbelievable that he got his feet down. I didn't think he was going to be in when I threw it, but yeah, unbelievable catch by him."
When LaPorta is going good, so is Detroit's entire offense. The Lions would be wise to try and feed him the ball even more in the coming weeks. It's clear he is heating up, and is even capable of making circus catches in the end zone and elsewhere on the field. He is earning the trust of Goff with every big play, and the successful red zone targets should only enhance that idea.
LaPorta has been good before in stretches, but it seems as if he's turned another corner in 2025. This two week run could be the best sign that things are turning in a positive direction for his immediate future with the Lions.
