Following their loss on Sunday Night Football (their sixth loss in a row overall), the Philadelphia Eagles have now dropped to 2-6 and are the worst team in the NFC East. It has been a slew of injuries that has assailed the defending division champions.
Major contributors on offense have missed time or will, including quarterback Jalen Hurts, wide receiver DeVonta Smith, and offensive lineman Landon Dickerson.
It is unfortunate that this kind of season is happening to the Eagles when the division looks ripe for the taking. They had previously won it three of the last four seasons while dealing with stiffer competition.
Another oft-injured player this year to add to the list is running back Saquon Barkley. He has played in just two full games of the Eagles’ eight, missing two entirely and getting knocked out early in the other four.
It is no question that the RB has declined since his 2,000-yard rushing season in 2024. That regression, along with the team’s struggles, brought on trade speculation ahead of the Nov. 10 deadline, though early reports are that the team is not going to trade him.
Following Sunday’s game and hearing the news, Barkley told reporters that he would love to stay with the team after the deadline. In a video from EJ Smith of PHLY Sports, he said he is not the type of guy to “jump ship” during a lost season.

The sentiment is defensible considering his tenure with the New York Giants. They made the playoffs just one time during his six years there, the other five years being seasons where they did not eclipse six wins.
Barkley and the Eagles will next host those Giants in Week 9. New York is the first place team in the division at 4-2-1 and just had their bye week. Philadelphia will have theirs after that contest is over.
Battling injuries this season, the 29-year-old back Barkley has carried the ball 56 times for 274 yards and two touchdowns. He is averaging nearly five yards a carry and has added seven receptions for 41 yards through the air.
