Former NFL running back LeSean McCoy knows how to handle the slippery conditions when playing in the snow. Saquon Barkley plans to tap that expertise before the Philadelphia Eagles’ Divisional Round game against the Los Angeles Rams.
Barkley, the Eagles’ star running back, is preparing for a possible snowy showdown at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday. The weather forecast predicts inclement conditions, bringing to mind McCoy’s legendary 2013 performance. In a blizzard-filled Week 14 game against the Detroit Lions, McCoy set a franchise record with 217 rushing yards, including two touchdown runs of 40 or more yards each.
Ahead of this weekend’s game, Saquon Barkley expressed his intention to contact LeSean McCoy for advice on handling the challenging conditions.
“Definitely going to call Shady just in case we do get some snow,” Barkley said Friday. “See what he did because it don’t make sense how he was able to cut in that snow. You could just see he was on a whole different level.”
Barkley, who hails from the northeast and played college ball at Penn State, is no stranger to snowy conditions. However, McCoy’s iconic performance has left a lasting impression on the current Eagles running back.
Barkley has certainly made a name for himself as well, notably setting an Eagles franchise record for rushing yards in a single game with 255 yards against the Rams earlier this season. He also set a new team record for total yards from scrimmage with 302, leaving a stunned Rams defense in his wake. Barkley scored two long touchdowns of 70 and 72 yards in that game, making it the most yards the Rams had ever allowed to a single player.
Despite that dominant performance, Barkley recognizes the Rams’ defensive improvements since then. The team has found its rhythm, and over the last two months, the Rams have become one of the league’s most formidable defenses. From Week 15 through Wild Card Weekend, they have allowed just 12.6 points per game and 96.6 rushing yards per game, with no rushing touchdowns given up in that stretch. The Eagles’ offense must be ready, with Barkley’s impact playing a significant role.
“They’re a way better team than they were on defense,” Barkley said. “In my opinion, watching film of them and seeing how much they’ve improved, they’re playing great football on that side right now. We know it’s going to be a challenge. When you rush for over 300 yards against a team, they’re going to have some type of game plan to make sure it don’t happen again.”
Despite the Rams’ defensive resurgence, Barkley remains confident in his team’s ability to succeed. When asked about the snow potentially impacting the game, he shrugged it off, stating, “I don’t really buy into the weather thing.”
Barkley’s mindset is simple: execution will be the key to victory for the Eagles, regardless of the weather conditions.
“Whoever comes out there and executes is going to be the team that’s going to win,” Barkley said. “That’s my mindset. I trust in the system that we have and I trust in the game plan that we have. Whether it’s five degrees or 90, just got to go out there and execute and we’re going to be alright.”
As the Philadelphia Eagles look to defend home turf and move closer to the NFC Championship Game, Saquon Barkley’s determination and confidence will be crucial as he leads his team against the Los Angeles Rams.
