Seahawks Insider Reveals Potential Plan for Jadarian Price

The Seattle Seahawks are less than a week away from beginning their Super Bowl defense, and questions remain about how the backfield will look without Kenneth Walker III.

For years, the Seahawks have used the run game as the foundation for their offense. This was evident during their Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots, when Walker won Super Bowl MVP for his performance. From Shaun Alexander to Marshawn Lynch to Chris Carson, Seattle’s offense has always been defined by a bruising power back.

But with Walker’s departure to the Kansas City Chiefs in free agency, there was a huge hole to fill in the backfield. Walker’s running mate and incumbent, Zach Charbonnet, tore his ACL during last year’s NFC Divisional Round victory over the San Francisco 49ers. While Charbonnet is expected back this season, he’ll miss at least the first four games of the year on the PUP list.

The Seahawks drafted Jadarian Price with the 32nd overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft. With Charbonnet’s injury, it was presumed that Price would take over the role as the lead back this year, or at least until the veteran returns to action. While that still may be the case, one Seahawks beat writer believes that the team will run with more of a committee backfield than originally thought.

The Athletic’s Andrew Destin wrote a piece breaking down the Seahawks’ backfield and revealed that he believes Price will predominantly play on first and second downs, while George Holani will handle passing downs, goal-line work, and presumably any work in two-minute drill situations.

Perhaps most interesting is that Destin believes free agent signee Emanuel Wilson will also factor in and split carries with Price.

“Certainly, the duo of Price and Holani — with free-agent signee Emanuel Wilson occasionally mixing in — does not look as strong on paper as Walker and Charbonnet.”

That shouldn’t come as a surprise, as Wilson was a factor during his three years with the Green Bay Packers . In 41 games, Wilson recorded 1,253 yards from scrimmage on 272 touches, with eight touchdowns, and filled in admirably when Josh Jacobs was injured.

Destin went on to say that his expectations for Price this year would be a comparable role to what TreVeyon Henderson had last season with the Patriots:

“With all of that in mind, I think it is fair to expect Price to put together a year somewhat similar to what TreVeyon Henderson provided the Patriots last season.”

Whether that is interpreted as a good thing or not, it appears that the Seahawks will be rolling out multiple backs at least until Charbonnet is back from his injury.
