Seahawks Lose Promising Edge Rusher on Waivers to Falcons

The Seattle Seahawks, like every other NFL team, had to make some tough decisions on Sunday.

The team cut around 40 players to get down to 53 by the deadline. Naturally, there are going to be some talented players that don’t make the cut. The 24 hours after the deadline are always hectic as teams rush to put in waiver claims for those players who were waived.

The Seahawks weren’t awarded any players on waivers, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t try to claim anybody. Because they won the Super Bowl, the Seahawks are dead-last in the waiver order, so every other team would have had to pass on a player the Seahawks wanted.

However, the Seahawks did see one player get claimed, and it’s probably a player they were hoping to stash on the practice squad.

Jared Ivey Claimed by Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons have been awarded edge rusher Jared Ivey. Ivey was one of the hardest cuts the Seahawks had to make, as he was narrowly edged out by Connor O’Toole.

The Seahawks clearly liked Ivey, though. The Mississippi product made the initial 53-man roster in 2025 as an undrafted free agent. Despite only seeing action in two games, Ivey kept his spot on the team all season.

The team was hoping Ivey would take a step forward this summer, but that didn’t really happen. O’Toole stood out more than Ivey did, and with the top four edge rushers set in stone, there was just no spot for Ivey in 2026.

Still, the standout UDFA would have been a perfect candidate for the practice squad. There, Ivey could have continued developing and been the next man up in case of injury. Instead, the George native will get a chance to go home and play for his hometown team.

As for the Seahawks, it was a bit surprising the team didn’t make any claims. The secondary, in particular, could have used some added depth. The team currently has no backup safeties on the roster, and you have to imagine that will change between now and Week 1.
