Sean McDermott had a blunt assessment of the Bills

The Buffalo Bills are headed into their bye week after playing some of their worst football of the season, and head coach Sean McDermott says his team needs to use the time off to make some serious changes.

After beginning the year 4-0, the Bills lost back-to-back games to opponents that were sizable underdogs against them. They lost to the New England Patriots at home last week and then fell 24-14 to the Atlanta Falcons in their Week 6 game on Monday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Ga.

Following Monday night’s loss, McDermott bluntly told reporters that where the Bills are at is “not good enough.” McDermott said the team needs to “start over” during the Week 7 bye.

“Figure out things on offense, defense and special teams,” McDermott said, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “We’ve got to start over and start from ground zero and figure this thing out and work our tails off to do it.”

On paper, 4-2 sounds like a solid record. What is most surprising is that the Bills are not even in first in the AFC East. The Patriots are also 4-2 and have the head-to-head tie-breaker against Buffalo.

Entering the season, many predicted that the Bills would have very little competition in their division. The Patriots are coming off back-to-back 4-13 seasons, though they did hire a new head coach in Mike Vrabel. The Miami Dolphins seem to be completely falling apart, and the New York Jets have not made the playoffs since 2010.

After not throwing an interception over the first three weeks of the season, Josh Allen has four picks in Buffalo’s last three games. He went just 15/26 for 180 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in the loss to Atlanta. Allen held himself accountable following the game, but McDermott believes the issues run from top to bottom. The Bills will be motivated to fix them over the next two weeks.
