When the Buffalo Bills walked off the field in the divisional round of the playoffs last season, there were plenty of analysts who wondered if a fifth-straight season of playoff losses would mark the end of head coach Sean McDermott's tenure with the team.
Turns out, it was the right decision by the organization to keep him on.
With Buffalo having already clinched the AFC East division for the fifth-straight year, the Bills are now pushing for one move up to try and get the top overall seed in the conference for the first time since 1993.
A win against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday will do more than just keep pace with the top-seeded Kansas City Chiefs, though.
For McDermott, a win on Sunday would mark the fifth straight season the Bills have won 11 or more games during the regular season. Only four other coaches have been able to reach that mark throughout NFL history.
McDermott has compiled an 83-43 record through his eight years in Buffalo. While his 5-6 playoff record has left plenty of Bills' fans frustrated, it's easy to see how consistent the organization has been under his leadership.
Before McDermott arrived, Buffalo had missed the postseason for 17 straight seasons. They hadn't won a playoff game in 23 years.
Since his emergence, though, McDermott has built one of the more disciplined and consistent rosters in the game. With the development and help of quarterback Josh Allen, Buffalo remains a team to be reckoned with.
And history is well on its way for Buffalo's coach.
