Sean McDermott won a lot of games coaching in the state of New York. From 2017 to 2025, McDermott won 98 regular season games at the helm of the Buffalo Bills. However, his long tenure as Buffalo’s leader came to an end after yet another postseason disappointment. The team that has had championship aspirations for years now lost in the AFC Divisional Round, and that played a big part in Buffalo’s decision to let McDermott go.
As of now, the coach remains unsigned. Rumors are swirling of another potential opportunity in New York, though, as Pat Leonard reported that McDermott was in person at the New York Giants minicamp. McDermott walked onto the field with Joe Schoen, the senior vice president and general manager of the Giants.
New York’s coach vacancy left by the departures of former head coach Brian Daboll and interim head coach Mike Kafka has already been filled, as John Harbaugh will be the Giants’ new leader. Harbaugh coached the Baltimore Ravens from 2008 to 2025. Prior to that, Harbaugh was on Andy Reid’s staff with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he worked alongside McDermott.
Harbaugh spent time as the special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach for Philadelphia from 1998 to 2007, while McDermott was with the team from 2001 to 2010, operating under a number of different roles. Both coaches are among the great defensive minds in football, so a reunion makes a lot of sense. The team appears to be fully staffed, but it wouldn’t hurt to find room for McDermott in order to bring in another respected voice for a team trying to take a few steps forward this year.
