Sean McVay angling for new contract from Rams?

Sean McVay made history on Sunday when he became the youngest-ever NFL head coach to win a Super Bowl. The 36-year-old has already accomplished more than most coaches will in their entire careers, and he is just getting started. Or is he?

McVay has not committed to coaching next season. He was asked on Monday if he will be back with the Rams in 2022, and the response he gave was one you might expect from a 65-year-old coach who just won a championship.

“We’ll see,” McVay said, via Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times. “I’m just enjoying this moment right now. I’m really happy to be a part of this. Happy for that.”

McVay also acknowledged that it will “definitely” be easier for him to call it a coaching career — whether that is in the near or distant future — now that he has a Super Bowl ring. Of course, many have wondered if he is simply angling for a new contract.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter noted before the Super Bowl that both McVay and Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor are in line for contract extensions this offseason. McVay is signed through 2023, and he is estimated to make around $8.5 million annually (coaching contracts are not disclosed). That places him outside the top five highest-paid coaches, which is something that should obviously change now.

The retirement talk could be genuine. McVay shouldn’t need to use much leverage to get more money from the Rams. Given all he has already accomplished, he should be able to name his price. Like one of his most important star players, McVay might actually be thinking about life after football. Though, we tend to doubt it.
