Shedeur Sanders already has an AFC North executive making an admission that could make the Browns look great in the long run

Friday night brought Cleveland Browns fans something they’ve long wanted: competent quarterback play.

It was only the first preseason game, but Shedeur Sanders impressed in his first NFL start, helping the Browns beat the Panthers 30-10.

Sanders threw two touchdown passes — both in the first half — and finished 14-of-23 for 138 yards. The rookie quarterback also added four runs for 19 yards on the ground. He undoubtedly made the most of his first career start, even if it was in an exhibition game. Sanders even had LeBron James taking notice of his first start.

AFC North executive admits they were impressed by Browns QB Shedeur Sanders

Falling to the fifth round in the draft didn’t stop Sanders from looking far better than his draft slot suggested — and others noticed.

“It’s early, but wow. Actually shocked at how good he looks,” an AFC North executive told Jordan Schultz.

Of course, expectations should be tempered. It was just one preseason game, and things could look very different next week against the Philadelphia Eagles. Sanders got the start because of injuries to Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel, and he took full advantage of the opportunity — showing glimpses of what he could be for Cleveland. He did take a couple of sacks he’d probably like to have back, but overall it was the kind of performance that makes you want to see him do it again.

So far in training camp, Sanders hasn’t taken reps with the starters, and that was still the case Friday night, when he went up against the Panthers’ first-team defense while playing with the Browns’ backups.

Sanders is starting to ignite the fanbase much like Baker Mayfield did during his rookie year when he flashed potential. Again, it’s just one preseason game — but for now, there’s reason for optimism in Cleveland.
