Shedeur Sanders breaks silence on battle with Deshaun Watson

According to the August 2 report by AP, the QB battle remains unsettled, with a decision most likely to come around August 22, ahead of the preseason clash against the Buffalo Bills.

While Sanders refused to comment on the competition, Watson was effusive in his praise for the younger QB’s growth.

“He’s definitely improved; he’s grown a lot. You can see it within his fundamentals, his reads, being able to execute, call the plays,” Watson said about Sanders. “You can tell he’s a lot more comfortable, and that he’s been putting in the work to be able to be where he is right now.”

Watson himself is eager to return to the preseason spotlight, with the Browns’ season opening on August 15 against the Chicago Bears.

Meanwhile, the QB race remains so evenly matched that Todd Monken admitted it’s still too early to predict a winner.

Four days into training camp, there’s still no clear answer as to who will be the team’s starting quarterback. Shedeur Sanders has been performing better than ever, but Deshaun Watson remains firmly in the race. Dillon Gabriel has also shown promise.

“I don’t think you’re really going to know until you get through all the installs because we’re not game planning against our defense,” Todd Monken said, per AP.

The head coach said it’s too early to say who will win the job, given there is still plenty of work to do and many things left to evaluate.

“I think the most important thing is from a process standpoint: how are we operating at the line of scrimmage? Where are their eyes? Are they taking command of one, the huddle, and then cadence and then understanding the concepts? All of our players are working through mistakes and fighting like hell to get better,” said Monken.

Both Sanders and Watson are building chemistry with veterans Jerry Jeudy and Cedric Tillman, while also connecting with rookies KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston.

However, training camp suggests Sanders has already developed strong chemistry with the rookie receivers.
